Let's Go To The Beach - Original Mixed Media Abstract Artwork by Emma Sharkey

When I was little, we moved from SA to Darwin and lived there for a couple of years. Most weekends went a little bit like this: Sailing Club or Ski Club for tea, out on a boat, riding around on a waverunner, enjoying the parap markets and throw in a bit of camping and 4wd'ing. Darwin seems to really bring out the social life in the locals and we were always out and about. One thing we couldn't do was go to the beach and have a swim very often. Too many crocs and Jellyfish.

When we moved back to Adelaide, our summer weekends were spent at the beach. Growing up in the Fleurieu Peninsula we were often at Silver Sands, Moana or Aldinga. A little round BBQ would be put in the boot, Dad would bury my brother and I up to our neck and we hoped the water wouldn't get us (LOL), the music was always playing and  Dad would hit the water with his wave ski and try to paddle down the waves.

Somewhere between catching waves, burying the kids and having a grand time, Dad also taught us how to body board or as we called it back in the olden days "Boogie Board!" I thought I was very fancy when he bought us our first ever slick bottom boards. I tried hard to be the proper surfer girl I was never destined to be.

We really loved the beach, we still do. When dad became unwell, our roles reversed and I started taking him for drives to the beach. We would head down to Port Noarlunga and drive back down the foreshore to Christies. As we came over the bluff what would be our last time at the beach, dad said to me "People don't realise how lucky we are, we have the best beaches in the world" and we really do. We are so spoilt in SA. 

So this is a little nod to the fun that can be had at beaches.
